Kelpies are bred for work. Without exercise and mental tasks they can invent their own jobs, and owners often don't like them.

First 30 days

• Settle first: Calm routines. Kelpie pups are alert and can become wired, so teach rest from week 1 with crate or pen naps.
• Vet visit in week 1: Health check, vaccination and worming plan, and parasite control for your area.
• Microchip and registration: Required in most states and territories; check your council.
• Socialisation: Controlled, positive exposure to traffic, people and stock-free environments. Ask your vet what is safe before vaccinations are finished.
• Start thinking games: Scatter feeding, simple puzzle feeders, name game and hand targets.

Grooming

Short coat: a weekly brush with a rubber mitt or soft brush, regular nail trims and ear checks. Shedding is seasonal. Bath only when needed.

Training

Kelpies learn fast, including the wrong things. Use reward-based training with short, frequent sessions. Teach an off-switch (settle on a mat), loose-lead walking and a reliable recall on a long line. Chasing movement (bikes, cars, kids) is common in herding breeds; manage it early and ask a qualified trainer. See training directory.

• Heat: Working dogs will keep going when they should stop. Exercise early or late, carry water, and rest in shade. Check pavement temperature with your hand.
• Ticks: Check daily by feel in tick areas. Ask your vet about prevention.
• Snakes: High-drive dogs will investigate. Keep on lead in snake country. If you suspect a bite, call your vet immediately and keep the dog still.
